Le Parti socialiste dénonce une dérive autoritaire du régime PASTEF
The Socialist Party (PS), through its spokesperson Abdoulaye Wilane, raised "a firm and solemn voice" to denounce what it calls "the slippery slope of authoritarianism down which the PASTEF regime is leading our country." According to the press release, this situation constitutes "a serious affront to the Senegalese democratic ideal."
The Socialist Party is concerned about "a worrying increase in arbitrary arrests and intimidation tactics targeting dissenting voices," which it considers to be the harbingers of a regression of public freedoms.
The party specifically cites "the imprisonment of Ms. Maimouna Ndour Faye, director of the 7TV channel, and Mr. Babacar Fall, director of information at RFM, as well as some of their technicians for the simple fact of having broadcast an interview."
He also mentions "the legal proceedings initiated against analysts Badara Gadiaga and Abdou Nguer, whose only crime is having exercised their critical thinking," seeing in this a "logic of repression of thought."
The Socialist Party believes that when "Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko publicly professes his desire to erase his opponents," these remarks "are no longer simply rhetorical excesses," but constitute "an unashamed threat against pluralism, a fundamental pillar of our republican pact."
The statement goes on to "condemn in the strongest possible terms this scandalous instrumentalization of the judicial system for purposes of political persecution" as well as "this hunt for dissenting opinions and this vengeful obsession which debases the function of government."
"A strong government, confident in its legitimacy, does not aim to silence its critics, but to convince them by the relevance of its actions and the robustness of its achievements," the party insists.
The text also highlights the real concerns of the Senegalese people, which the Socialist Party believes are being ignored by the government: "The unbearable cost of living," "the continued surge in the cost of electricity," "the prohibitive price of fuels," and "a suffocating tax burden" which, according to the party, "is stifling the purchasing power of families and the activity of small businesses."
"While Senegalese people are exhausting themselves counting their francs to survive, the government seems to only count its opponents in order to better silence them," the statement denounces.
The Socialist Party "urgently calls for a return to reason of state, moderation, and the republican spirit." It reiterates that "freedom of expression is not a concession; it is an inalienable right, the very foundation of our democratic system."
"Senegal deserves infinitely better than the politics of fear," before reaffirming its determination to "remain unwavering in the defense of the Republic, freedoms and the incompressible dignity of the Senegalese people," the PS believes.
