Le Parti socialiste sonne l’alerte pour la défense de l’État de droit et des libertés au Sénégal
In a political context marked by institutional tensions and concerns about respect for fundamental freedoms, the Socialist Party (PS) of Senegal has launched a solemn appeal in favor of defending the rule of law, independent justice, freedom of the press and national cohesion.
Through its spokesperson, Abdoulaye Wilane, the Socialist Party reaffirmed its "unwavering commitment to the fundamental principles of the Republic, pillars of our democracy and guarantors of national stability."
A reminder of the need for republican vigilance.
In its statement, the party founded by Léopold Sédar Senghor emphasized the need to preserve institutional balance and trust between citizens and their institutions. "The rule of law is not a political option, but an absolute republican imperative," stressed Mr. Wilane, adding that justice must remain "independent, impartial, and accessible to all, without pressure or manipulation."
For the Socialist Party, any attempt to weaken the judiciary is tantamount to a direct attack on the Republic. "There cannot be a justice system for every regime: there is only one justice system, at the service of the people and the law," the statement reiterates.
Civil liberties and a free press: achievements to be preserved
The Socialist Party also warned against any restriction of public freedoms, recalling that the right to demonstrate, the fair treatment of all citizens and the preservation of democratic achievements "constitute the foundation of Senegalese democracy".
Regarding press freedom, the Socialist Party (PS) calls for the protection of journalists and the strengthening of media pluralism. The party advocates for an environment where the media can "inform to enlighten, not manipulate," believing that the press must remain "an instrument of truth, not destabilization."
Neutrality of security forces and political dialogue
The party praised the crucial role of the defense and security forces, guarantors of peace and national sovereignty, while reiterating their duty of neutrality. "They must remain free from any political manipulation," the statement warned, asserting that their impartiality is essential for the country's stability.
The Socialist Party advocates a peaceful political climate based on "dialogue, responsibility, and mutual respect." For the party, the Republic cannot be built "through constant confrontation," but rather through a spirit of unity and consultation.
A national conference on secularism has been announced.
As part of its republican and inclusive vision, the Socialist Party has announced an upcoming national symposium on secularism, organized by its Socialist Vision structure. This meeting, open to all active forces within the nation, aims to rethink secularism in light of contemporary realities.
For the Socialist Party, secularism "is not an instrument of exclusion, but a principle of unity and mutual respect between citizens."
A call for unity among democratic forces
Faced with what the party describes as "threats to the cohesion and sustainability of the Republic", the Socialist Party calls for unity among all democratic and republican forces to block any democratic backsliding.
"Force should never belong to the street or to collective passions, but to the law," insists Abdoulaye Vilane, urging political actors to show discernment, courage and fidelity to democratic values.
A commitment to a fair and fraternal Republic
In conclusion, the Socialist Party reaffirms its commitment to an "inclusive, fair and fraternal" Republic, where every citizen, regardless of their origin, belief or condition, finds "their place, their dignity and their voice".
"The Republic is in peril, the nation is threatened: we must act, with discernment and responsibility," the statement concludes, in a clear warning against excesses that could shake the democratic foundations of Senegal.
