The mayor of Medina, Bamba Fall, is engaging in a direct confrontation with the state. According to reports in the newspaper Les Échos, the mayor is calling on the population to hold a sit-in this morning at 11 a.m. to defend land assets that he considers to be under threat.
Denouncing a "power grab," he asserts that the site, initially requisitioned by the prefect "to store sand," is now the subject of construction work. "I came to witness the demolition of our land by the State of Senegal, which has no title to the property," he fumes after visiting the site. According to him, the municipality holds the land title, and, in his capacity as mayor, he specifies that "no demolition permit, nor any building permit" has been issued by his department.
Bamba Fall points to a glaring inconsistency at the highest levels of the administration, arguing that in this affair, "the State is doing worse than what it accuses local authorities of." The mayor also broadens the debate to include the dispute concerning the Iba Mar Diop stadium, which the State allegedly refused to hand over to the municipality upon completion of the works.
Considering this site as one of the last remaining spaces in the area, the mayor is calling for collective action: "This isn't just Bamba Fall's fight, but that of the entire population of the Medina." He warns that the protest will continue "until the land is returned to the Medina."
