Seydi Gassama, executive director of Amnesty International Senegal, warns of the dangers facing participants in public debate. In a message posted on X on March 20, 2025, he wrote: "Anyone who engages in it risks, under the influence of emotion or passion, a verbal escalation, which could lead to prosecution for defamation, public insults, offense, or the dissemination of false information."
Faced with this threat, he calls for urgent reform to better protect freedom of expression. "We must eliminate custodial sentences for these offenses and prioritize financial penalties," he argues. According to him, this approach would make it possible to punish abuses while preserving the fundamental right to express oneself, without risking imprisonment for words spoken in the heat of debate.
