A guest on iRadio's "Sunday Jury," the leader of the AGIR movement, Thierno Bocoum, defended the role of civil society in public debate and refuted any confusion with the opposition.
"Civil society is not the opposition. It is playing its role and, on the contrary, it is an opportunity for Senegalese democracy," said the former parliamentarian, responding to a question that civil society was playing the role of the opposition.
For Thierno Bocoum, civil society has always played a central role in Senegalese democratic life. He points out that the most significant mobilizations have often come from it, like the M23, which brought together citizens and politicians around republican principles.
"Today, under the pretext that civil society is at the forefront of certain demonstrations, we want to make people believe that it is doing the work of the opposition. The opposition does indeed exist, and I often say oppositions, because each entity has its own strategy and orientations."
According to him, there is no contradiction in civil society taking the lead in mobilizations on issues of governance or social justice. "All the demonstrations organized by civil society are those that have had the greatest impact in Senegal. This is an approach to be welcomed and encouraged. It is important that citizens come together around issues of principle."
The AGIR president also discussed the reshaping of the opposition, marked by the creation of new fronts and alliances. "There are dynamics being created. You have all seen Barthélemy Dias and others' initiatives to approach party leaders and members of civil society to create a broad front. There's a time for everything. What matters is that democratic diversity is preserved."
Faced with criticism of the opposition's lack of visibility, he responds: "We work, we oppose appropriately, while being a force for proposals and ideas. We are on the ground, in the name of democracy."
