A violent fight between co-wives has sparked outrage in Touba after images surfaced showing the victim's serious injuries. The Ndamatou district police station has detained state-registered nurse Y. Ndao, who works at the Cheikh Ahmadoul Khadim National Hospital in Touba, for assault and battery resulting in a 45-day period of temporary incapacity for work.
It all started with an incident at the marital home in the ñari pneu neighborhood where the two co-wives reside: the first wife (awoo) Y. Ndao, aged 38, on the ground floor, and the second wife (ñareel) MO Dieng upstairs.
According to the victim's account, Y. Ndao went upstairs, claiming she wanted to clean the living room, something she had never done before. Asked to leave, the nurse categorically refused. As MO Dieng was going downstairs, her co-wife allegedly attacked her with a scalpel blade.
Seriously injured, the second wife was taken to the hospital. She has deep lacerations on her right cheek and left ear. After receiving initial treatment, MO Dieng filed a complaint accompanied by a medical certificate attesting to a 45-day period of incapacity for work.
A suspicious medical certificate
In response, the nurse in question reportedly contacted her department head to obtain a medical certificate. Dr. A. N., head of the general surgery department at Cheikhoul Khadim Hospital in Touba, is said to have issued her with a certificate attesting to a 30-day period of incapacity for work.
When questioned by investigators, Y. Ndao admitted to slashing her co-wife, but accused the latter of attacking her first. "She attacked me with a blade. I managed to wrest the weapon from her to use during our fight," she stated, while expressing regret for her actions, according to Seneweb sources. She also filed a complaint accompanied by a 30-day medical certificate.
The vigilance of the investigators
Without the tenacity of the police officers at the Ndamatou police station, the victim could have been arrested for mutual assault and battery. Despite the medical certificate attesting to 30 days of incapacity for work, investigators found no apparent injuries on Y. Ndao.
Suspecting that the accused may have self-inflicted minor injuries to her hands in order to obtain a false certificate, the head of the police department ordered two counter-expertises at the Matlaboul Fawzeyni hospital in Touba and the one in Ndamatou.
The results are conclusive: medical certificates of 12 and 7 days were given to the police, confirming the suspicion of the issuance of a fraudulent medical certificate.
A doctor in the crosshairs of the justice system
Summoned and questioned, Dr. A. N. justified the 30-day period of incapacity for work by the nature of the nurse's professional activity, specifying that the injuries observed on her hands were, in fact, minor. Confronted with the results of the independent expert assessments, the surgeon stated that he respected the decisions of his colleagues who had taken the opposite view.
Following his hearings, Dr. N. was not detained but remains at the disposal of the justice system. He could be prosecuted by the public prosecutor at the Diourbel High Court for issuing a false disability certificate.
According to testimonies gathered by Seneweb, his possible arrest could seriously impact his service due to the numerous medical operations he has to perform, which would explain his release after each hearing.
State-certified nurse Y. Ndao is expected to be brought before the Diourbel prosecutor's office on Monday to answer for her actions.
