Hydrologie du Fleuve Gambie : Des hausses notables observées à Kédougou et Mako

The hydrological situation in the Gambia River basin continues to evolve as a result of the latest rainfall recorded in the region. According to data from the Tambacounda-Kédougou Water Resources Brigade, several stations have recorded increases in water levels, reflecting a still-active hydrological dynamic at the end of the rainy season.

Tributaries on the rise overall

Diaguiri Station (tributary of the Gambia River upstream of Mako):

  1. The water level reached 2.54 meters at 8 a.m. on October 21, compared to 2.35 m the previous day, an increase of 19 cm. However, this level remains significantly lower than that of the same period in 2024 (4.25 m).

Afia Pont station (Thiokoye):

  1. The water level was measured at 2.34 m, compared to 2.19 m on October 20, an increase of 15 cm. Here again, the annual comparison shows a decrease compared to 2.90 m recorded at the same date last year.

Niokolo Koba Station:

  1. A slight drop of 3 cm was observed, with the level dropping from 5.46 m to 5.43 m in 24 hours. In 2024, the river peaked at 8.29 m, a sign of a more marked decline this year.

Diahra Pont Station:

  1. The river level is currently at 1.76 m, with no data available for the previous day.
  2. Sinthiou Malème and Goumbayel stations:
  3. Water levels did not reach the scale, reflecting low hydrological activity at these points.

The Gambia River: contrasting trends depending on the location

  1. At Kédougou, the river recorded a significant rise of 25 cm, reaching 3.28 m compared to 3.03 m the previous day. This level, however, remains lower than that observed on October 21, 2024 (4.09 m). The alert level for this station is set at 7 m, a threshold still far from the current level.
  2. In Simenti, the trend is also upward, with 4.98 m recorded compared to 4.91 m on October 20 (+7 cm). The level remains well below the alert level of 13 m.
  3. In Mako, the water level continues to rise, with 3.11 m recorded, 11 cm more than the day before. In 2024, at the same time, the river reached 4.11 m. The alert level there is set at 6 m.
  4. In Gouloumbou, the situation is the opposite: the river level has dropped by 35 cm, from 6.71 m to 6.36 m. This level remains well below that observed in October 2024 (12.75 m), but remains close to the alert level of 12 m.
  5. A general trend under control but to be monitored

Overall, today's data shows an upward trend at the upstream stations (Diaguiri, Afia Pont, Kédougou, Mako, Simenti), while the decline continues downstream at Gouloumbou.

Levels remain well below critical thresholds, but vigilance remains essential, particularly as runoff water supplies stabilize and flows begin their seasonal decline.
