The prefect of the Kédougou department is sounding the alarm over the increase in stray animals in the municipality and its surrounding areas. In an official statement, the administrative authority called on owners to take all necessary measures to ensure the surveillance and confinement of their animals in appropriate enclosures or spaces.
According to the prefect, the regular presence of cattle and other animals on public roads now poses a real threat to road safety. Several accidents recorded in recent weeks are believed to have been caused by these animals wandering around, a phenomenon that has become a cause for concern in the area.
The press release recalls that criminal law provides for severe penalties for negligent owners. The prefect therefore calls for individual and collective responsibility to put an end to this situation, which endangers the lives of road users.
In the absence of corrective measures taken by animal keepers, the administration, in collaboration with the municipality, will strictly enforce the provisions of Decree No. 86-275 of March 10, 1986 regulating the impounding of stray animals.
An approach that local authorities justify by the need to preserve public safety and restore order in the urban areas of Kédougou.
