Veille de Tabaski à Thiès : Les ménages noyés dans une misère collective
Thiès is buzzing with activity, just days before the Tabaski festival. But many fathers and mothers are at their wits' end. Everyone is dismayed by the ongoing crisis, even outside of major religious holidays like Korité and Tabaski, when many families go hungry.
For A. Diagne, a taxi driver, many families will not be able to celebrate Eid al-Adha this year. This conviction is widely shared by residents of the city interviewed, for whom "the situation is all the more distressing because, in reality, one can see that in the working-class neighborhoods, in particular, the people of Thiès live in poverty on a daily basis."
"Many people from Thiès will celebrate Tabaski in collective misery and they will not be able to enjoy a beautiful celebration," laments this father of a family married to two women, encountered in front of the City Hall, "on the edge of the abyss."
Many other household heads are at their wits' end. They are stunned by the high prices of food. Like this woman we met at the central market, who kept fuming: "We're witnessing real price inflation."
In the various markets of Thiès, the complaints are unanimous: "Prices are generally very high compared to customers' purchasing power. We are witnessing a skyrocketing increase in costs." In short, in the railway city, life is lived to the rhythm of a gloomy pre-holiday atmosphere.
