Mourir de faim pour rencontrer Jésus: dans l'Est du Kenya, une nouvelle secte affole la population
A deadly new sect is spreading fear in eastern Kenya. The village of Kwa Binzaro, on the country's east coast, is in turmoil after investigators discovered possible mass graves. These revelations revive the trauma of the Shakahola tragedy two years ago.
The alarm was raised by residents at the end of July. During an intervention, the police rescued four severely malnourished people and discovered a body and bones. The search subsequently identified 21 suspicious sites, considered potential mass graves.
The victims are believed to be linked to the Shakahola sect, named after the nearby forest where more than 440 bodies were exhumed in 2023. At the time, followers were encouraged to starve themselves to death in order to "meet Jesus."
A court in Malindi authorized the exhumations after initial investigations revealed the victims may have been "starved and suffocated due to extreme religious ideologies." As of Friday, 13 additional graves have been located.
According to Kenya's Interior Minister, a former sect member found in Kwa Binzaro was contacted from his cell by Paul Mackenzie, the evangelical pastor imprisoned after the Shakahola massacre. Mackenzie, who is charged with murder and terrorism, is believed to be involved in this new case.
Exhumations are expected to begin in less than a week, as the investigation is already focusing on 11 identified suspects.
